From literature to history, Wladimir Berelowitch retraces here his personnal and professional experience while studying Imperial Russia in France, from the 1960s to the present time. If the ideological constraints and access to the archives have changed, the questioning remains the same: how the elites formed in Russia during the eighteenth century? What was the role of scientific exchanges between Russia and Europe in the development of social sciences within this vast Empire? Finally, how did the historiography of Russia evolved from the eighteenth century to the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.

Born in 1946, Wladimir Berelowitch studied at the École normale supérieure (ENS) de Saint-Cloud and Sorbonne University. He defended his PhD thesis at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in 1977. He is Director of studies emeritus at EHESS where he was teachning since 1990 and Professor emeritus of history at the University of Geneva where he taught from 2000 to 2011. His work deals with the history of the Russian and Soviet education during the twentieth century, the socio-cultural history of elites in Russia during the eighteenth century, especially in the field of education, and the historiography of Imperial Russia.
